What is Yin Yoga?
Yin yoga is a meditative, slow-paced style of yoga which incorporates principles of Traditional Chinese medicine with asanas. It is based on the Taoist concept of Yin and Yang according to which Yin is the stable, passive and feminine energy, while Yang is the dynamic, active and masculine energy. Even though Yin and Yang are opposite energies, they complement each other; both energies are vital and provide balance in our existence. when we practice Yin, we touch different layers of the body.
Yin yoga provides physical, energetic, mental and emotional benefits and it can assist our personal spiritual growth. Which benefits students enjoy would depend on their own personal intention to practice.
“We don’t use the body to get into the pose. We use the pose to get into the body.”
Yin yoga offers many health benefits, as it improves flexibility, hydrates tissues, promotes breath awareness, and helps the mind and body to relax by activating the parasympathetic nervous system which is responsible for the rest and digest response.
A Yin practice can help to balance our energy and emotions: it encourages us to be in tune with our breathing, listen to our body, accepting our limits in a non-judgemental way and instead of striving to reach the perfect pose, we treat ourselves with compassion and kindness, learning how to accept who we are and how we feel in the moment.
